Side effect Paxil. Pregnant women who take Paxil while pregnant, especially during their first trimester, are at an increased risk for having a child born with a birth defect. Recent studies have suggested that women who took Paxil during pregnancy were at an increased risk for having a baby with heart malformations when compared to other antidepressants or to women who were not taking any antidepressants. One study has also linked Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) to the side effects of Paxil.
In December 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Paxil warning to doctors, other healthcare professionals and consumers regarding the increased risks for Paxil birth defects when the antidepressant is taken during the first trimester of pregnancy. Most of the birth defects included heart defects and, in most cases, were atrial and ventricular septal defects. Both of which are characterized by holes in the walls of the chambers of the heart. A heart related Paxil birth defect can range in severity from minor, which may resolve without treatment, to severe conditions which usually require surgical repair.
The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that linked Paxil to PPHN several months after the initial FDA warning for Paxil users. The results from the study indicated that women who use Paxil during the last trimester of pregnancy were six times more likely to have a baby born with PPHN than women who did not use any antidepressants during pregnancy. A PPHN Paxil side effectrequires prompt diagnosis and treatment, and even then the conditions may prove fatal. Babies who survive the initial trauma of PPHN frequently suffer permanent damage. Damages include hearing and speech as well as damage to the brain which may result in developmental delays and neurological defects. Other possible birth defects from Paxil include difficulties with breathing, seizures, vomiting, low blood sugar, tremors and irritability.
Due to the risk of a child experiencing the adverse effects of Paxil, the FDA has asked the manufacturer of the drug, GlaxoSmithKline, to change the Paxil pregnancy categoryfrom C to D.

Pregnant on Paxil has been linked to serious birth defects. Previous studies have indicated that using the antidepressant drug Paxil while pregnant increases the risks for having a child born with a serious birth defect. One of the Paxil bad side effects includes Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). Paxil falls into a group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It has been found that Paxil increases the occurrence of PPHN when taken by pregnant women.
A study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2006 that indicated babies of women who were taking an SSRI during the last trimester of pregnancy were six times more likely to have PPHN compared to babies of mothers who weren’t taking any medication. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Paxil warning to alert doctors and other healthcare providers that they should consider alternatives to SSRIs for women who are pregnant or could become pregnant. The manufacturer of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline, strengthened the Paxil pregnancy categoryand changed the pregnancy classification from Pregnancy Category C to Pregnancy Category D.
This Paxil birth defect of PPHN can be life-threatening to a baby. Symptoms for this side effect of Paxil include respiratory distress (including signs such as grunting and flaring nostrils), rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, cyanosis (a bluish tinge to the baby’s skin even while the baby is getting extra oxygen to breathe) and low oxygen levels in the blood. Paxil is prescribed for depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. Paxil side effects could be potentially life threatening for a fetus, so the risks associated with the drug should be considered before its use. For many who are taking Paxil during pregnancy, or other antidepressants, it is not an easy option to discontinue its use. It is estimated that up to 20 percent of pregnant women suffer from clinical depression. Sometimes the depression may be so severe that Paxil and pregnancy may outweigh the associated risks.

Paxil, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is an antidepressant drug known to be a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It was approved by the FDA to treat depression and several other psychiatric disorders. Studies have been conducted that included women who took Paxil while pregnant. The results indicated women who took the antidepressant drug during pregnancy were at an elevated risk for having a child born with a Paxil birth defect. In addition to birth defects, there are some other serious side effects of Paxil. These include mania, where individuals may become hyperactive, excitable, or elated, seizures, bleeding problems and sexual problems.
Paxil birth defects have led to people filing lawsuits against Paxil. In October 2009, GlaxoSmithKline was ordered by a Philadelphia court to pay a $2.5 million settlement in a suit claiming Paxil caused heart defects in a 3-year old boy. The boy in question was born with some serious alleged Paxil birth defects such as heart defects which threatened his life. According to the boy’s mother, it was because she took Paxil during pregnancy. During the case, the plaintiff’s attorneys claimed that in 1993 GlaxoSmithKline destroyed raw data from animal studies and in 1996, 1998 and 2000, safety reports were withheld concerning the adverse effects of Paxil.
This $2.5 million settlement was the first verdict in more than 600 cases filed alleging GlaxoSmithKline knew the risks associated with being pregnant on Paxil and hid the risks to boost its profits. The most common heart defects seen were ventricular septal defects, which are holes between the heart’s two main pumping chambers. After the alert, the FDA announced in December 2005 that it was requiring GlaxoSmithKline to add additional warnings about the birth defects from Paxil. The FDA took the action because the early results of two other studies indicated that women who took Paxil while pregnant, particularly in the first trimester of pregnancy, were about one and a half to two times more likely to give birth to a baby with heart defects as women who received other antidepressants or women in the general population. The most commonly seen heart defects were atrial and ventricular septal defects.

One Paxil side effect included a serious medical condition called Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). Paxil warning. The risk of birth defects may be of particular concern for women who take Paxil during pregnancy. It was recently announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that early studies indicated women who were pregnant on Paxil were at an increased risk for having a child with a birth defect.

Paxil is an antidepressant drug that is in a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Drugs in this group affect the levels of neurotransmitters that the nerves in the brain use to communicate with one another. Many experts believe there appears to be a compelling association between neurotransmitter levels in the brain and clinical depression. The SSRI class also includes Prozac and Zoloft. Paxil is approved by the FDA in order to treat depression and several other psychiatric disorders. As with any drug, there are side effects of Paxil to be aware of, especially concerning Paxil and pregnancy. The FDA reviewed two earlier studies. The results indicated that women who took Paxil during the first three months of pregnancy were about one and a half to two times more likely to have a baby with a Paxil birth defect, particularly a heart defect, when compared to women who took other antidepressants or women in the general population. Most of the Paxil birth defects reported in these studies were heart defects such as atrial and ventricular septal defects (holes in the walls between chambers of the heart). These types of heart defects that a Paxil baby may develop can range in severity from relatively minor that resolve without treatment to those that cause serious symptoms and need to be repaired surgically. The risk for this type of heart defect is approximately one percent of births in the general population.

The manufacturer of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline, has changed the product labeling from a Pregnancy Category C to a Pregnancy Category D. This indicates that the studies in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. This change in the product labeling is the FDA warning Paxil users about the associated risks of taking Paxil while pregnant.

A new type of microsurgery that is gaining popularity in both the United States and the U.K. may be an effective way to treat children who were born with birth injuries such as cerebral palsy.

The procedure, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, reduces spasticity in the body by cutting certain nerves connecting muscles with the spinal cord. Doing this has yielded noticeable results in some cerebral palsypatients, improving their motor skills and decreasing pains that are associated with the birth injury.

Beau Britton, a seven-year-old child from the UK who was born withcerebral palsy, was the first person from Britain to undergo the treatment. Born prematurely and weighing less than three pounds, Beau suffered brain damage that prevented his legs from working properly.

A new birth injury neurological fund for 2011-2012 has been set up by the state of New York to cover birth injury lawsuits; however, it is receiving much controversy as to who is truly benefiting from this endeavor. A large contributing factor to this initiative is the fact that hospitals will save an estimated $320 million in malpractice premiums, according to the Greater New York Hospital Association because over half of all medical malpractice lawsuits filed are birth-related.

One of the conditions of having a brain or spinal cord related birth injury covered is that it has to be, “caused by the deprivation of oxygen or mechanical injury in the course of labor, delivery or resuscitation or by other medical services provided or not provided during delivery admission”. What has some patient advocates concerned is that they believe having the government pay for medical negligence cases will allow the responsible medical parties to go “unpunished” and free from criticism. The medical community, however, largely supports the initiative assuring the community that hospitals will be frequently monitored and as part of the health budget plan, a “state obstetrical patient safety workgroup” will be established to help ensure that medical professionals are following the standard medical practices expected of them while in the delivery room.

Sources report that New York will contribute to the birth injury fund as follows: $30 million will be put into to the fund in its first year before increasing to $70 million in its second and third years. By its fourth year, the state will be contributing $100 million to the fund. Now, families still must file lawsuits and prove medical negligence in court and if they win or settle the lawsuit, they would then be enrolled into the fund. The fund then pays for the child’s lifetime medical costs, however, the defendants are still responsible for attorneys’ fees and any punitive damages awarded by a jury.
