Paxil Lawsuit Hotline Created (800) 611-7080. Best Legal Source has created a hotline for women who took Paxil and had a baby with birth defects to allow them to get free information on the Paxil Lawsuit as well as arrange free legal consultations.

Although the issue over Paxil as well as other SSRI antidepressants has been known for some time now and numerous Paxil Lawsuit cases have already been filed due to babied born with birth defects, there are still many women who are unaware of the link between Paxil and Birth Defects. .

Other Paxil Lawsuit cases have been filed over the past few years involving different adverse side effects including suicidal thoughts, sometimes leading to suicide, withdrawal side effects as well as other issues with Paxil and that have led to Paxil Lawsuit cases. .

More recently we have received reports that Paxil and other SSRIs may lead to heart attacks in adults. We have yet to substantiate these reports but will continue to follow the issue and report any information that might be relevant to an issue over Paxil and Heart Attacks that could lead to another round of Paxil Lawsuit cases. .

Paxil is not the only drug of its type that has faced a large number of lawsuits due to side effects however, the fact that Paxil is one of the best selling drugs in its class, it is not unexpected that there would be a larger number of Paxil Lawsuits vs other antidepressants simply based on the number of people who have used Paxil. .

If you took Paxil and gave birth to a baby with birth defects, please feel free to contact us for information or to arrange a free legal consultation.

Paxil Lawsuit: Families are continuing to file lawsuits against Paxil because of the occurrence of side effects from Paxil. Paxil is known as an anti-depressant, specifically a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). There are different chemicals in your brain and SSRIs work to prevent the nerve cells from reabsorbing serotonin, thus making serotonin in the brain more available. It is believed by some that an imbalance of chemicals is the cause of depression and one available treatment is prescribing SSRIs because serotonin is essential to mood enhancement. While SSRIs were first prescribed to depressed patients because of the reduced amount of side effects when compared to previous generations of anti-depressants, the side effects of Paxil can be extremely dangerous. Of particular concern is Paxil and pregnancy.

Paxil Lawsuit: Taking Paxil while pregnant can affect the development of the fetus. This then results in the Paxil bad side effects. Taking Paxil during the first trimester is especially dangerous. When babies are exposed to Paxil during the first trimester, they may be born with heart problems such as atrial or ventricular septal defects. These defects are holes in the wall that separates the heart chambers. When this heart problem exists, it makes the organ work harder than it should. It is possible that over time this defect may correct itself, but may be so severe that it will require surgery. Paxil Lawsuit

Another negative Paxil side effect includes abnormalities in the development of the abdomen. A type of abdominal wall defect linked to the use of Paxil is when the intestines, liver and other organs stay outside the abdomen in a sac. In a Paxil baby, the muscles in the abdominal wall (umbilical ring) do not close properly. Once the baby is born and doing well, this side effect of Paxil will require corrective surgery. This surgery creates a cavity inside the abdomen to contain the intestinal contents. If your child has suffered from a Paxil birth defect, contact a Paxil lawyer for a consultation.

Most of the birth defects included heart defects and, in most cases, were atrial and ventricular septal defects. Both of which are characterized by holes in the walls of the chambers of the heart. A heart related Paxil birth defect can range in severity from minor, which may resolve without treatment, to severe conditions which usually require surgical repair.
The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that linked Paxil to PPHN several months after the initial FDA warning for Paxil users. The results from the study indicated that women who use Paxil during the last trimester of pregnancy were six times more likely to have a baby born with PPHN than women who did not use any antidepressants during pregnancy. A PPHN Paxil side effectrequires prompt diagnosis and treatment, and even then the conditions may prove fatal. Babies who survive the initial trauma of PPHN frequently suffer permanent damage. Damages include hearing and speech as well as damage to the brain which may result in developmental delays and neurological defects. Other possible birth defects from Paxil include difficulties with breathing, seizures, vomiting, low blood sugar, tremors and irritability.
Due to the risk of a child experiencing the adverse effects of Paxil, the FDA has asked the manufacturer of the drug, GlaxoSmithKline, to change the Paxil pregnancy categoryfrom C to D.

Pregnant on Paxil has been linked to serious birth defects. Previous studies have indicated that using the antidepressant drug Paxil while pregnant increases the risks for having a child born with a serious birth defect. One of the Paxil bad side effects includes Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). Paxil falls into a group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It has been found that Paxil increases the occurrence of PPHN when taken by pregnant women.
A study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2006 that indicated babies of women who were taking an SSRI during the last trimester of pregnancy were six times more likely to have PPHN compared to babies of mothers who weren’t taking any medication. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Paxil warning to alert doctors and other healthcare providers that they should consider alternatives to SSRIs for women who are pregnant or could become pregnant.… Read More

The post PPHN and Paxil appeared first on Seedol.com.

The manufacturer of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline, strengthened the Paxil pregnancy categoryand changed the pregnancy classification from Pregnancy Category C to Pregnancy Category D.
This Paxil birth defect of PPHN can be life-threatening to a baby. Symptoms for this side effect of Paxil include respiratory distress (including signs such as grunting and flaring nostrils), rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, cyanosis (a bluish tinge to the baby’s skin even while the baby is getting extra oxygen to breathe) and low oxygen levels in the blood. Paxil is prescribed for depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. Paxil side effects could be potentially life threatening for a fetus, so the risks associated with the drug should be considered before its use. For many who are taking Paxil during pregnancy, or other antidepressants, it is not an easy option to discontinue its use. It is estimated that up to 20 percent of pregnant women suffer from clinical depression. Sometimes the depression may be so severe that Paxil and pregnancy may outweigh the associated risks.
If your child suffers from a Paxil birth defect, you may want to consider contacting a Paxil lawyer.

Adverse effects of Paxil have been a controversial target. A Paxil lawsuit was filed in June 2004 against the manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline. The Paxil claims

In August 2004, a consumer activist group launched a national awareness campaign to announce that antidepressants are “Unsafe at Any Dose”. The use of Paxil during pregnancy has been the source of debate in the absence of any controlled trials being done with pregnant woman taking Paxil.
Studies have shown that 10 to 20 percent of pregnant women experience depression and many women struggle when deciding whether to take Paxil while pregnant. The hesitation comes because pregnant women have to consider the potential risks to the fetus or if they should endure the depression. Depression can bring about pregnancy complications by causing mothers to alienate themselves from their families and interfering with a mother’s ability to bond with her baby. Obstetricians also face challenges when considering prescribing Paxil to their pregnant patients since they are not fully aware of the consequences. It is possible that Paxil and pregnancy risks may outweigh the harmful effects of depression. Many women who are pregnant on Paxil continue the use of the antidepressant since they do not have the information necessary to make an informed decision.
In Canada, a Paxil warning was issued in August 2004, suggesting women who took Paxil may be putting babies at risk when used during the later stages of pregnancy. Some reported side effects of Paxil in babies included feeding and/or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle rigidity, jitters and constant crying. Paxil and breastfeeding might also affect the baby. Generally, it has been believed to be safe to breast feed while taking antidepressants, though a lack of controlled studies is also missing from this area of concern.
If your child suffers from a side effect Paxil may have caused, consider contacting a Paxil lawyer. The results indicated women who took the antidepressant drug during pregnancy were at an elevated risk for having a child born with a Paxil birth defect. In addition to birth defects, there are some other serious side effects of Paxil. Paxil birth defects have led to people filing lawsuits against Paxil. In October 2009, GlaxoSmithKline was ordered by a Philadelphia court to pay a $2.5 million settlement in a suit claiming Paxil caused heart defects in a 3-year old boy. The boy in question was born with some serious alleged Paxil birth defects such as heart defects which threatened his life. According to the boy’s mother, it was because she took Paxil during pregnancy. During the case, the plaintiff’s attorneys claimed that in 1993 GlaxoSmithKline destroyed raw data from animal studies and in 1996, 1998 and 2000, safety reports were withheld concerning the adverse effects of Paxil.
This $2.5 million settlement was the first verdict in more than 600 cases filed alleging GlaxoSmithKline knew the risks associated with being pregnant on Paxil and hid the risks to boost its profits. More Paxil lawsuits are being filed each month by mothers who took Paxil while pregnantprior to the Paxil warning issued in 2005. It may take years for the Paxil litigation to be resolved and GlaxoSmithKline may have to pay millions to fully resolve the issues.
If you or a loved one has experienced serious side effects from Paxil, you should contact a Paxil birth defects lawyer.
Paxil long term side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has examined the relationship between Paxil and pregnancy. The manufacturer of the antidepressant, GlaxoSmithKline, has worked in conjunction with the FDA to conduct studies that include women who took Paxil during pregnancy. It has been found that women who take Paxil during pregnancy may be at an increased risk for having a child born with a Paxil birth defect.
In September 2005, the FDA and GlaxoSmithKline issued a Paxil warning to doctors about a new study on major birth defects. The alert was based on a study done by GlaxoSmithKline that examined major birth defects in infants born to mothers who took antidepressants, Paxil included, during the first trimester. The study included more than 3,500 pregnant women and concluded that Paxil was linked to twice as many major birth defects compared to other antidepressants.… Read More

The post Paxil Birth Defects appeared first on Seedol.com.

The study included more than 3,500 pregnant women and concluded that Paxil was linked to twice as many major birth defects compared to other antidepressants. Most of the Paxil birth defects seen in the study were heart related. The most common heart defects seen were ventricular septal defects, which are holes between the heart’s two main pumping chambers. After the alert, the FDA announced in December 2005 that it was requiring GlaxoSmithKline to add additional warnings about the birth defects from Paxil. The FDA took the action because the early results of two other studies indicated that women who took Paxil while pregnant, particularly in the first trimester of pregnancy, were about one and a half to two times more likely to give birth to a baby with heart defects as women who received other antidepressants or women in the general population. The most commonly seen heart defects were atrial and ventricular septal defects.
In July 2006, the FDA issued another alert because of results of a study conducted on the use of antidepressants during pregnancy. One Paxil side effect included a serious medical condition called Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). This condition causes abnormal blood flow causing insufficient oxygen throughout the body. Babies with this side effect of Paxil can be very sick and may die. Recent studies in Sweden and the U.S. have shown that when a mother is pregnant on Paxil their unborn babies are six times more likely to have PPHN.
If your child has suffered from any of the side effects of Paxil, consider contacting a Paxil birth defects lawyer.

Paxil warning. The risk of birth defects may be of particular concern for women who take Paxil during pregnancy. It was recently announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that early studies indicated women who were pregnant on Paxil were at an increased risk for having a child with a birth defect.

Paxil is an antidepressant drug that is in a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Drugs in this group affect the levels of neurotransmitters that the nerves in the brain use to communicate with one another. Many experts believe there appears to be a compelling association between neurotransmitter levels in the brain and clinical depression. The SSRI class also includes Prozac and Zoloft. Paxil is approved by the FDA in order to treat depression and several other psychiatric disorders. As with any drug, there are side effects of Paxil to be aware of, especially concerning Paxil and pregnancy.… Read More

The post Birth Defect Risk with Paxil appeared first on Seedol.com.

The FDA reviewed two earlier studies. The results indicated that women who took Paxil during the first three months of pregnancy were about one and a half to two times more likely to have a baby with a Paxil birth defect, particularly a heart defect, when compared to women who took other antidepressants or women in the general population. Most of the Paxil birth defects reported in these studies were heart defects such as atrial and ventricular septal defects (holes in the walls between chambers of the heart). These types of heart defects that a Paxil baby may develop can range in severity from relatively minor that resolve without treatment to those that cause serious symptoms and need to be repaired surgically. The risk for this type of heart defect is approximately one percent of births in the general population.

The manufacturer of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline, has changed the product labeling from a Pregnancy Category C to a Pregnancy Category D. This indicates that the studies in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. This change in the product labeling is the FDA warning Paxil users about the associated risks of taking Paxil while pregnant.

A new type of microsurgery that is gaining popularity in both the United States and the U.K. may be an effective way to treat children who were born with birth injuries such as cerebral palsy.

The procedure, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, reduces spasticity in the body by cutting certain nerves connecting muscles with the spinal cord.
“It would be wonderful to take him skiing and we would love him to be able to experience the freedom of independent movement and if ever possible, to dance” said Beau’s mother, Tracy.

There are a number of necessary medical costs that families with a child born with cerebral palsy must find a way to afford. If you or a loved one have a child who was victimized by a birth injury and are in need of money to afford medical care, pursuing a birth injury lawsuit may result in a large cash settlement.
A birth injury is described as a trauma inflicted on an infant during the process of birth. A birth injury can be caused from extreme pressure being applied to a baby passing through the birth canal, while other birth injuries can be caused by premature birth, prolonged labor, breech (legs exiting first) and the irregular shape or small size of the mother’s pelvis. Doctor and nurse negligence and medical malpractice are other reasons of child birth injuries that result in numerous birth injury lawsuit being filed yearly.

There are many different types of birth injuries such as swelling, bruising, forceps markings or fractures (known to occur during a breech birth) which are not considered to be serious or life threatening and heal typically within two or three weeks.
There are many different types of birth injuries such as swelling, bruising, forceps markings or fractures (known to occur during a breech birth) which are not considered to be serious or life threatening and heal typically within two or three weeks. It is believed that the loss of any nerve or muscular function caused by pressure, swelling, or bruising around the nerves to be temporary and will usually resolve itself within two weeks or up to a few months. Birth injuries such as facial paralysis are caused when excessive pressure is applied with forceps on the facial nerves during birth. The condition will gradually improve on its own if the nerve was simply bruised, but surgery may be required if a nerve is torn during the birth process. The birth defect know as cerebral palsy is a condition, or group of disorders, involving brain and nervous system functions affecting muscle movement, muscle tone, motor skills, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking caused by brain damage before, during or after childbirth . Erbs palsy is another birth injury that causes weakness or paralysis of the arm brought about by the pulling and stretching of nerves surrounding the shoulders during birth, excessive pulling on an infant’s arm, or pressure on the raised shoulders during a difficult breech delivery. If recovery does not occur within six months, surgery might be required to fix the nerve damage and the child will face a poor outlook for improvement.

If your child suffered from birth injuries, birth injury attorneys should be contacted to see if you are entitled to compensation.

The growing numbers of birth injuries in California hospitals have led to studies conducted to find out what is causing the increase. An example of one such study was commissioned by the California Hospital Association to find out what the percentage of birth injury lawsuits
With these astonishing results, it leaves little reassurance for expecting California mothers who have made arrangements to deliver in a California hospital.

There are many factors that can lead to a birth injury
, some of them due to natural causes beyond anyone’s control while others are due to negligence on the medical facility’s part. Medical malpractice in birth injuries can be attributed to medical procedures that were not adhered to or as a lack of direct contribution from the attending doctors or staff. For example: failure to administer tests to detect abnormalities, signs of fetal or respiratory distress and not performing a Cesarean section within the required time frame. Two of the common birth injuries that can result from medical negligence are:

• cerebral palsy
- This condition usually occurs by injuries or abnormalities of the brain that is caused either before or after birth which is characterized by motor dysfunction, e.g. spasms and lack of muscular coordination.

• erbs palsy
(or brachial palsy) – A paralysis or weakness of the arm caused by stretching of the nerves around the shoulder during birth. This damage can be caused by excessive pulling on the arm during birth or by pressure on raised shoulders during a breech delivery.
Even though careful monitoring throughout all stages of pregnancy is important, following set hospital procedures and guidelines by all medical staff helps to ensure a successful delivery process for both the mother and the infant. If in the unfortunate event that your child received a birth injury due to medical negligence, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to contact a reputable birth injury law firm
who has the experience and knowledge you need to need to determine if you have a case.

birth injuries such as cerebral palsy and erbs palsy can be devastating both physically and emotionally for all parties involved, not to mention the unexpected medical expenses that will be involved. It is especially difficult when the expecting mother has had no prior indications throughout her prenatal care that there will be any complications with her baby or her labor process. Words cannot even begin to express the heartache of finding out after delivery that the baby’s birth injury
could have been prevented.

Medical negligence is defined in many states like California as, “the act or omission in treatment of a patient by a medical professional, which deviates from the accepted medical standard of care”. What this simply means is the doctor and/or medical staff didn’t follow standard medical procedures when treating and caring for a patient. There are many things that can cause birth injuries such as: fetal distress, a breech birth, shoulder dystocia (Shoulder dystocia occurs when a baby’s head and shoulder get lodged in their mother’s pelvic bone), and oxygen deprivation.… Read More

The post Birth Injury Legal Options in California appeared first on Seedol.com.

birth injuries such as cerebral palsy and erbs palsy can be devastating both physically and emotionally for all parties involved, not to mention the unexpected medical expenses that will be involved.

There are many things that can cause birth injuries such as: fetal distress, a breech birth, shoulder dystocia (Shoulder dystocia occurs when a baby’s head and shoulder get lodged in their mother’s pelvic bone), and oxygen deprivation. So, giving birth to an injured baby following an otherwise normal pregnancy can be a very confusing situation for California families and if they choose to pursue a birth injury lawsuit
, there will be some questions that only an experienced birth injury attorney
can answer. Some commonly asked questions are:

? What is the statute of limitations for bringing a birth injury claim in my state?

? In a lawsuit for birth injury, how does a jury determine if medical negligence was involved?

? Do all medical malpractice cases require expert testimony?

? If we prosecute a case on behalf of our child, how long will it take to reach resolution?

? Are there limits on the amount of recovery against a doctor or hospital?

So, if it is determined that your child has suffered a birth injury and you feel that medical negligence was involved, contacting a knowledgeable birth injury law firm
can put you on the right track to possibly receiving monetary compensation that you and your family deserve.

A new birth injury neurological fund for 2011-2012 has been set up by the state of New York to cover birth injury lawsuits; however, it is receiving much controversy as to who is truly benefiting from this endeavor. A large contributing factor to this initiative is the fact that hospitals will save an estimated $320 million in malpractice premiums, according to the Greater New York Hospital Association because over half of all medical malpractice lawsuits filed are birth-related.

According to Times Union, New York hospitals will no longer cover medical costs for children who have suffered a birth injury due to medical malpractice, instead, any birth injury lawsuit
or birth injury settlement will be paid by the state. One of the conditions of having a brain or spinal cord related birth injury covered is that it has to be, “caused by the deprivation of oxygen or mechanical injury in the course of labor, delivery or resuscitation or by other medical services provided or not provided during delivery admission”.… Read More

The post Medical Budget to Include Birth Injury Funds Established in New York appeared first on Seedol.com.

One of the conditions of having a brain or spinal cord related birth injury covered is that it has to be, “caused by the deprivation of oxygen or mechanical injury in the course of labor, delivery or resuscitation or by other medical services provided or not provided during delivery admission”. What has some patient advocates concerned is that they believe having the government pay for medical negligence cases will allow the responsible medical parties to go “unpunished” and free from criticism. The medical community, however, largely supports the initiative assuring the community that hospitals will be frequently monitored and as part of the health budget plan, a “state obstetrical patient safety workgroup” will be established to help ensure that medical professionals are following the standard medical practices expected of them while in the delivery room.

Sources report that New York will contribute to the birth injury fund as follows: $30 million will be put into to the fund in its first year before increasing to $70 million in its second and third years. By its fourth year, the state will be contributing $100 million to the fund. Now, families still must file lawsuits and prove medical negligence in court and if they win or settle the lawsuit, they would then be enrolled into the fund. The fund then pays for the child’s lifetime medical costs, however, the defendants are still responsible for attorneys’ fees and any punitive damages awarded by a jury.

Contact a birth injury lawyer
if you feel that your child may have suffered a birth injury due to medical malpractice and want to know if you may be entitled to a settlement.
