Bayer announced earlier this year that they intended to settle the outstanding Yaz and Yasmin Lawsuit cases. It has been reported that Bayer currently faces in excess of ten thousand lawsuits over Yaz and Yasmin. Both Yaz and Yasmin were block buster drugs for Bayer and netted the company in excess of a billion dollars in revenues. Considering the large volume of serious blood clot related injuries, many of which were fatal, there are many who believe that the FDA should issue a Yaz Recall, which would include Yaz and Yasmin. The FDA however is not quick to issue such recalls and is often criticized for being slow to act and allowing drugs to stay on the market that should be removed. The FDA has an extremely small budget when compared to other Government agencies. The revenues of a single major pharmaceutical company can far exceed the average operating budget of the FDA. The FDA is also often criticized for conflicts of interest among the experts it employs as consultants to render opinions on drugs being considered for recall or other actions.

Whether Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella are ever recalled is yet to be seen. These fourth generation birth control products are not the only products of their kind that have been linked to blood clot related injuries such as Deep Vein Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolisms and other blood clot related injuries. Numerous drugs similar to Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella are also the target of lawsuits over blood clot related injuries. Thus far Bayer is the only manufacturer that we are aware of that has publically announced its intention to settle the outstanding lawsuits against them.
