Yaz, also known but its chemical names Drospirenone Ethinyl Estradiol is an oral birth control product made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Yaz lawsuit cases are being filed on behalf of women who took Yaz and suffered a blood clot related injury. Yaz, as well as other birth control products containing Drosperidone have been linked to negative side effects that have resulted in blood clot related injuries to women who take these oral birth control products.
Yaz Birth Control Side Effects
The side effects of Yaz that have been linked to serious injury are related to abnormal blood clotting, which has been linked to Yaz and other products containing Drospirenone. The most serious side effects of Yaz Include:
Pulmonary Embolism –Yaz Side Effects
A pulmonary embolism or emboli occurs in the pulmonary system (lungs). One of the most common causes of pulmonary embolisms are blood clots. A blood clot in the lungs can prevent blood from flowing through the lungs properly.
Blood must pass through the lungs in order to be oxygenated. Once blood is oxygenated it then carries oxygen to the rest of the body, including the brain. If the lungs cannot oxygenate the blood properly, any number of other organs can fail. A pulmonary embolism can be fatal or cause serious life altering injuries.
Deep Vein Thrombosis- Yaz Side Effects (DVT)
Studies reviewed by the United States Food and drug administration indicate that Yaz increased the risk of blood clots by 74%. One of the most common medical issues that occur as a result of Yaz related blood clots is the development of a deep vein thrombosis.
A deep vein thrombosis often occurs in the legs. Some of the largest veins in the body are in the legs therefore it is possible for larger blood clots to form in the legs than elsewhere in the body. If a blood clot in the leg does not completely occlude the vein, the condition may not be life threatening.
The greater dangers related to deep vein thrombosis occur when a blood clot in the leg (often a large blood clot) breaks into smaller blood clots and travels through the venous system. These smaller blood clots can reach the brain, which may cause a stroke. It may reach the heart, which may cause a heart attack, or it can reach the lungs which may cause a pulmonary embolism. The smaller veins in the body can be completely blocked off by a piece of a large blood clot that formed in the more sizeable veins of the legs.
Stroke- Yaz Side Effects
A stroke can be caused by a number of factors, several of which can be linked to blood clots caused by Yaz. A stroke can occur as a direct result of a blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain or part of the brain. A stroke can also be caused by the brain not receiving an adequate supply of oxygen due to a blood clot in the lungs.
Stokes can be fatal or leave a victim permanently disabled.
Heart Attack- Yaz Side Effects
Heart attacks linked to Yaz side effects can occur for many of the same reasons a stroke may occur. If a blood clot restricts blood flow to the heart or heart muscle, a heart attack can occur. If the heart does not receive adequate oxygen, a heart attack can result.
The heart has four chambers and four valves. Two of the hearts chambers pump blood to the lungs to be oxygenated and returned to the heart where the other two valves pump the oxygenated blood to body. The heart and heart muscle also require oxygen to function. Anything that disrupts the normal rhythmic process of the heart can result in heart failure in the form of heart attacks and other heart problems.
Even “minor” heart attacks causes some level of permanent damage to the heart. Multiple heart attacks, even small ones, can cause cumulative damage to the heart which can signficantly shorten life expectancy. One “major” heart attack can often result in sudden death. One of the symptoms of heart attacks is sudden death. It seems somewhat strange to consider death a symptom, none the less, death can be a symptom of many medical issues including heart attacks.
Gallbladder Disease- Yaz Side Effects
Yaz has been linked to the buildup of cholesterol which can interfere with the normal function of the gallbaldder. Calcifications, which form into gallstones, can result as large particles of cholesterol bind together and then harden. Yaz has been linked to serious gallbladder issues often resulting in the need for gallbladder removal.
Yaz Reviews and Yaz Recall Information
An FDA panel has been formed which has been reviewing the fate of Yaz since 2011. At this point Yaz has not been recalled by the FDA despite its link to severe injuries in thousands of women.
A Yaz recall may never occur. Once a product receives FDA approval, the process of recalling the product can be tedious and laden with bureaucratic delays. The panel of experts assembled by the FDA to review the benefits of Yaz and weigh them against the risks, has thus far allowed Yaz to remain on the market.
One factor that may impede a Yaz recall occurring is the fact that conflicts of interest often exist in the panels of experts the FDA assembles to review and advise them on recall matters. Experts may be allowed to sit on a recall or review panel even though they have a clear conflict of interest, so long as they make it known that the conflict exists.
The current FDA protocols for dealing with panel member conflicts of interest could result in one or more panel members acting as a consultant for or receiving monies for other services from a company, while sitting on a panel that is reviewing that same company’s drug.
Yaz Lawsuit News
Despite the lack of action on the Part of the FDA, over 10,000 Yaz lawsuits have been filed and Bayer is currently going through the process of settling the outstanding Yaz lawsuits it faces. Even as Bayer makes settlement offers to the thousands of plaintiffs that have already filed Yaz lawsuits, more Yaz lawsuits continue to be filed.
